How does Flagship deal with those funny ?é symbols that appear in data originating from non-English or older file sources?.

Backgrounder: In the 1960s when computers used a 7 bit character system. It had a very simplified alphabet. There were several competing standards from DOS, ANSI, and IBM (called EBCDIC). All of these standards have different ways of storing language accents. Storing file standards have changed a lot over the years.  PCs we have gone from DOS format, to Windows ANSI format to UTF-8. The most common is Windows ANSI but moving towards UTF-8.

“Who cares?”, you say.

Well you don’t have to any longer.  iAddress V5 inspects data for “Character Set” type during import, standardizes things, and allows you to choose the standards that match the use of your output file.

“The nice thing about standards is that you have so many to choose from.”

Incoming  Mail Alert: A New Opportunity for Omnichannel Engagement

Are you a sender or recipient of direct mail? Your perspective may shape how you view Canada Post’s MyMail app and its email notifications—either as a valuable innovation or an added layer of digital clutter.

From a marketer’s standpoint, MyMail represents a compelling opportunity to extend brand reach across channels. By including your registered Canada Post account number in the postal indicia of your mail piece, you can trigger advance notifications to recipients who have opted into the service. This allows your message to appear not only in the physical mailbox but also on mobile devices and inboxes—reinforcing brand visibility at multiple touchpoints.

For organizations currently using a third-party indicium (such as a mail service provider or partner), this is a good time to evaluate the benefits of establishing your own Canada Post account to fully leverage this feature.

For consumers, participation in MyMail is entirely optional. Those who opt in can preview incoming mail, helping them stay on top of bills, statements, and promotional offers. For example, shoppers may access deals earlier, while donors can see how the charities they support—such as UNICEF—are engaging with them, reinforcing connections with the organizations they value.

An additional benefit is the integration of QR codes within direct mail pieces. These codes provide a seamless bridge between physical and digital experiences, directing recipients to videos, donation pages, or product catalogues. This approach strengthens engagement and exemplifies effective omnichannel marketing in today’s environment.

Beyond the Donation: Building Unshakeable Trust Through Direct Mail Impact Updates

For users of Flagship Software’s iAddress™, the mechanics of getting a piece of direct mail into a donor’s mailbox is a science you have already mastered. But once that envelope is opened, securing a donor’s long-term loyalty requires a deep understanding of human psychology and communication.

In today’s fundraising landscape, acquiring a new donor is increasingly expensive—recent benchmarks show the cost to acquire a single new donor has risen to $161 [Note 1]. Because charities may need multiple gifts from a new donor just to break even, retention is paramount. Transforming a post-Easter impact update into a masterclass in trust-building is one of the most effective ways to retain your supporters and pave the way for future continuity. Here is how to elevate your impact updates to build profound trust with your charity donors and prospects:
The Tangible Power of Physical MailIn an increasingly digital world, sending a beautifully crafted, physical impact update through the mail acts as a powerful statement of value. Human beings are fundamentally wired to respond to tactile experiences. Research shows that the touch and feel of paper—known as haptics—give donors a deeper understanding and engagement with printed materials [Note 2]. A physical piece of mail holds attention longer than digital ads and triggers a greater emotional response, as demonstrated by studies like those from Temple University [Note 3].
By investing in a well-designed direct mail package, you are sending a subconscious message that your donors’ generosity is highly valued. A polished, professional package conveys trustworthiness, inspires confidence in your mission, and establishes deep credibility for future efforts.
Educating Instead of BoastingEffective impact updates must go beyond dry, high-level summaries. To build lasting trust, your communication should adopt an educational, transparent tone that places the donor at the center of the story.
Instead of simply reporting on your charity’s greatness, reframe the message to show the donor their direct impact. Include tangible outcomes, such as progress indicators, early results, and authentic stories about the lives they have changed for the better. To enhance this connection, make the communication feel human and personal—tactics like using a “You” focused narrative, incorporating handwritten-style fonts, or adding a photo of the letter’s signer remind the donor that there are real people behind the cause [Note 4].
Crucially, you must remain transparent. Donors deeply respect organizations that communicate with clarity about both their current achievements and the ongoing needs that are still underway.
Inspiring Continued SupportA strong impact update should seamlessly set the stage for what comes next without feeling like a sudden, aggressive demand for more money. You can naturally transition into your next spring appeal by tapping into a fundamental human instinct: we are deeply motivated to protect what we have already built [Note 5].
A thoughtful transition acknowledges the milestones you have completed together, but emphasizes that sustained support is essential to keep that momentum alive. Instead of positioning your upcoming appeal as a brand new “ask,” frame it around protecting the vital progress you and the donor have just achieved. By highlighting what might be lost or delayed if support isn’t sustained, future appeals become a logical, necessary continuation of your shared journey.
The Data FoundationThese psychologically powerful narratives can only build trust if they reach the right people. By pairing these communication strategies with the robust address validation, NCOA move updates, and de-duplication tools of your iAddress software™, you ensure that you maintain a “Clean Data House” [Note 6]. This guarantees that your carefully crafted messages land directly in the hands of the donors who are ready to continue their journey with you.

Community Mailbox Program Is Expanding

Flagship Software, as an active member of NAMMU (National Assn of Major Mail Users) is supportive of Canada Post’s transitional plan to prepare a sustainable future for mail. The expansion of the community mailbox program has been delayed for  many years and is one step towards operational savings that will help secure the future of mail and parcel delivery in Canada.  You are probably familiar with these boxes and how they work.  If they are not in your community yet, you’ll see them cropping up across the country and replacing in-home delivery. These boxes are 75% less expensive than door-to-door delivery.  There are options for seniors and those with disabilities to have accommodations.

From Easter to Early Summer: Your Spring Strategy Roadmap

This spring, we’re exploring how Canadian not for profit organizations can build on the momentum created during their Easter mailing campaigns and carry that energy into the months ahead. While Easter appeals often center on themes of hope, renewal, and new beginnings, the work of engaging donors meaningfully continues well past the holiday itself.
Over the next three months, we’ll share a focused series of articles designed to help your organization or your customer’s organization transition smoothly from Easter messaging into strong spring and early summer outreach.
March: We begin with strategies for extending Easter’s spirit of renewal into early spring. This month’s article explores how to reinforce the emotional connection donors felt during your Easter appeal without overwhelming them, and how to use light-touch stewardship to strengthen relationships throughout March.
April: Next month, we will shift into story-driven engagement. April’s article highlights how to use narrative, impact updates, and coordinated multi-channel communication to deepen donor connection as you bridge your Easter appeal with upcoming spring fundraising efforts.
May: Our final article focuses on turning spring momentum into early-summer readiness. We look at how to re-engage donors with growth-oriented messaging, targeted asks, and seasonal storytelling that keeps your mission top of mind as summer approaches.
Together, these articles will provide a practical, month-by-month roadmap to nurture donor relationships, avoid fatigue, and create a cohesive, meaningful donor experience from March through May.
Part 1: Carrying Easter Momentum Into Spring: Turning Renewal Into Action
As Easter mail campaigns wrap up across Canada, many not for profit organizations find themselves asking the same question: How do we keep this energy alive? After all, Easter isn’t just a moment on the calendar—it’s a narrative of renewal, rebirth, and fresh hope. And your donors just leaned into that message.
March is the perfect moment to pivot from the Easter appeal to a broader Spring Renewal Strategy. Instead of shifting abruptly to your next campaign, continue the story donors already connected with: the transformation they make possible.
1. Keep the Theme Alive With “Renewal Updates”
Your Easter letter likely focused on hope and new beginnings. Now is the time to reinforce it. A simple follow up email or social post sharing a “first bloom” story—an early impact update tied directly to Easter giving—strengthens donor confidence. Use language like beginning to grow, opening doors, first steps, and springing forward. This is especially powerful for donors who gave for the first time at Easter. They responded emotionally; now they need reinforcement.
2. Coordinate Channels Thoughtfully
Donor fatigue is real, but donor indifference is worse. March is ideal for light touch, high meaning stewardship across your communication channels.
Email:
Send a short “What you made possible this March” note; bonus points if you embed a 20–30 second thank you video recorded on a phone by a frontline staff member. Authenticity beats polish every time.
SMS:
Try a no ask value exchange. A link to a spring-themed phone wallpaper or a mini-impact report shows appreciation without pressure which builds trust heading into April and May.
Phone:
March is perfect for gratitude calls. Even 30 seconds matters. “We just wanted to say thank you again for your Easter support. Here’s the first transformation you helped spark…” This warm touch has been shown to increase donor retention for the next campaign window.
3. Bring in the 2026 Tech-Touch
If your Easter letter included a QR code, keep the experience going. Share the same page link in your digital channels so donors see a seamless, coordinated campaign story. And don’t forget sustainability; your donors care. Match your messaging around renewal with small reminders of your eco-commitments (recycled stock, eco-audits, etc.).
4. Segment for Maximum Impact
March communications should be small, thoughtful, and personalized.Lapsed donors: “We’re beginning a new season—would you consider being part of it again?”Monthly donors: No asks. Only gratitude. This month, they get VIP treatment.By extending Easter’s spirit through March with intention and warmth, not pressure, you set the stage for strong, mission-driven fundraising in April and May.

USPS implementing a temporary 8% price increase on key parcel services (effective April 26)

Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select are affected; First‑Class Mail stamps are not.
What’s changing and when
The U.S. Postal Service has announced a transportation‑related, time‑limited 8% price increase on several domestic shipping services, effective at 12:00 a.m. CT on April 26. The adjustment is slated to remain in place through January 17, 2027, pending review by the Postal Regulatory Commission.
Services affected
The 8% increase applies to base postage prices (not a separate line‑item surcharge) for the following domestic competitive products in both retail and commercial channels:
Priority Mail ExpressPriority MailUSPS Ground AdvantageParcel Select
Why USPS is doing this
USPS cites rising transportation and fuel costs and positions the change as a temporary bridge to a longer‑term pricing mechanism that better reflects market conditions. USPS also notes it has “steadfastly avoided surcharges” and that this increase is less than one‑third of what private carriers charge for fuel alone.
What this means for your shipping costs
If you use any of the affected services, you should expect roughly 8% higher USPS parcel postage beginning April 26. Industry coverage underscores that the PRC will review the filing, but shippers should plan for the new rates to be in effect through the 2026 peak season.
